Quick Start for Developers
1. Understand the Structure
Read these in order:
1. READY_FOR_PRODUCTION.md (5 min - overview)
2. docs/PROJECT_STATUS.md (10 min - current state)
3. CRITICAL_APIS_TO_BUILD.md (30 min - what to build)
4. docs/API_IMPLEMENTATION_GUIDE.md (20 min - how to build)
2. Pick an API to Implement
// Start with: POST /api/v1/notifications/send
// Template in CRITICAL_APIS_TO_BUILD.md
// Follow middleware pattern in src/lib/route-middleware.ts
// Use api-response utilities from src/lib/api-response.ts
3. Verify It Works
# Run tests (test suite structure exists)
pnpm test
# Start dev server
pnpm dev
# Test endpoint
curl -X POST http://localhost:3000/api/v1/notifications/send \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"schoolId":"...", "userId":"...", "title":"Test"}'

Critical Decisions Made
1. API Response Standardization
Decision: All APIs return { success, data/error, timestamp, path }
Benefit: Client-side error handling is uniform across all 100+ endpoints
Implementation: apiResponse() and apiError() utilities handle this
2. Middleware-Based Architecture
Decision: Composable middleware for auth, audit, rate-limiting
Benefit: Eliminates 100+ lines of repetitive route logic
Pattern: Stack middleware composably: withAuth(withAudit(withRateLimit(...)))
3. Unified Data Fetching Hook
Decision: Replace 71 manual fetch implementations with useApi() hook
Benefit: Automatic caching, retry logic, error handling, loading states
Benefit: Single place to manage API changes
4. Business Logic Separation
Decision: Move logic out of components into utils (signage-utils, exam-utils, grading-engine)
Benefit: Testable, reusable, framework-agnostic
Example: computeSecurityRisk() can be tested without React
5. WebSocket for Real-Time
Decision: Use WebSocket for notifications, exam events, signage updates
Benefit: <500ms latency vs polling delays
Note: Fallback to polling available if WebSocket not supported
Known Limitations & Roadmap

Support Resources
If You Get Stuck
- Check
CRITICAL_APIS_TO_BUILD.mdfor endpoint specs - Check
docs/API_IMPLEMENTATION_GUIDE.mdfor examples - Look at existing routes in
/src/app/api/v1/for patterns - Reference middleware in
src/lib/route-middleware.ts - Check utility files for business logic
Common Questions
Q: Where do I start?
A: Build POST /api/v1/notifications/send first (simplest, highest impact)
Q: How do I test APIs?
A: Use the template in route-middleware.ts + built-in test structure
Q: How do I add real-time updates?
A: Subscribe to WebSocket events, emit via broadcast() function (ready to build)
Q: Where's the database schema?
A: prisma/schema.prisma has all 145 models with comments
